We all need nutrients! Where do they come from?
Did you know that all of the things that humans and plants need are already here on earth and are continually cycling around and around? You might remember how this happens with the water cycle from Year 3. It is the same for the nutrients we need. We need food to survive and we get this from many places, but as we have discussed everything can be traced back to plants. This means we as well as all the other animals (including all the tiny microscopic organisms) are CONSUMERS.
We learnt last term that plants make their own food from the energy they get from the sun, making them the earths only true PRODUCER. However, they also use valuable nutrients to grow like we do. So how does this happen and where do the nutrients come from? This is where the DECOMPOSERS come into the picture. They help to cycle the nutrients from dead organic matter back into the soil so that the nutrients can be used again by plants and around they go again.
